5/2/08Another gay reason to visit Costa Rica
The times they are a-changin’! White sand beaches and unspoiled nature trails aside, Costa Rica boasts yet another attribute gay and lesbian travelers can celebrate – the island is becoming increasing gay friendly by the day. This week the government of Costa Rica announced its decision to officially recognize The International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on May 17 for the very first time. IDAHO day is currently marked in over 50 countries on the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. The President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Dr Oscar Arias Sanchez and the Health Minister, Maria Luisa Avila. said that public institutions in the Latin American nation must "facilitate, promote and support activities directed at the eradication of homophobia." The health minister also took the opportunity in public remarks to emphasize that homophobia had been a constraint for those who want to fight against AIDS. Kudos to Costa Rica!

4/25/08London's Questionably Gay-Friendly Mayor...
Ken Livingston, Mayor of London, has refused to financially support the 2008 International Gay & Lesbian Football Association World Championship game which is scheduled to take place in London this August. Now the IGLFAWC is faced with a funding shortfall that could be the death knell of the entire enterprise. Simultaneously, according to PinkNews, Mr. Livingstone is actively campaigning for gay votes in his re-election campaign against Brian Paddick, an openly gay candidate in the race. The mayor even recently took a tour of Soho bars with a band of supporters to elicit support, which seems contradictory to his stance regarding the IGLFAWC. So the question is how gay friendly is London’s current mayor? And is his recent show of support for the gay community genuine or purely political? Something tells me that the folks over at the IGLFAWC who are trying to scrape together a mere $60,000 to stay afloat while the Mayor’s office attempts to raise millions to support the 2012 Olympics would probably say the latter.

4/18/08Gay Jesus Orgy Causes Furor in Austria
An art exhibition containing an etching depicting Jesus and the apostles engaged in a "homosexual orgy" during the biblical Last Supper has got some folks fuming in Austria. On March 12 Religion, Flesh and Power, a collection of about 50 paintings, drawings and sculptures by Austrian artist Alfred Hrdlicka opened at an Archdiocese of Vienna museum just across the cobblestones from St. Stephen's Cathedral, a grand church that was built in 1147 and serves as the epicenter of the capital. Among the works on display at the exhibition is Hrdlicka's rendition of the Last Supper: a large, loosely rendered black and white etching that shows Jesus and his disciples engaging in sex acts on the table where they shared their final meal before Christ's crucifixion. Hrdlicka, who turned 80 earlier this year, reportedly drew the scene in 1984 in tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini, an Italian philosopher and award-winning filmmaker whose treatment of religious themes put him at odds with the Catholic church. Angry Catholics have found the whole affair a bit much to stomach with visitors showing their disdain by making comments in them museum’s guest book. In response, the etching has been moved to the private Ernst Hilger Gallery, a short stroll from the cathedral museum, where the rest of Hrdlicka's works will remain on display until next month.

4/7/08Will that be a double or single?
It's a scene that has frequently been played out to comedic effect in movies, but to some gay and lesbian couples having their relationships scrutinized upon checking into a hotel is anything but a humorous occurence. Personally, I've checked into hotels in the past with gal pals and had astute hotel reception attendants presume that my girlfriends and I were "together together" if you know what I mean. Conversely I've caught the quick smirks from the same folks when I've checked in with a boyfriend at my side and requested a suite with a single king size bed. All of which begs the question: What is the proper protocol that should be adopted by staff at hotel reception? I say they should simply make it a point to always ask what type of room you prefer rather than make assumptions. What about you?
